Your ear needs to preserve a certain pressure to function but diving will alter this pressure, which can cause damage to the ear. The fluid buildup may not be infected, but it can cause hearing loss. The hearing loss may be temporary and disappear when the drugs are stopped, or the loss may be permanent. Ear infections and fluid in the middle ear after a cold or the flu can cause loss in hearing, but the loss is usually temporary.

If your hearing is normal your testing will indicate that you hear a whisper, the ticking of a watch or clock, and that you can hear normal conversation. Conductive hearing loss can often be helped by an aid. Conductive losses cannot be helped with hearing aids due to damage in the inner ear and outer/middle ear.

Musicians, construction workers and farmers are all susceptible to this type of loss. This occurs when the nerves in the inner ear breakdown it prevents proper hearing. It can delay in speech development which indirectly affects the school success of children.

This makes it even harder to diagnose and, by that time that it is, some degree of the resulting hearing loss may be permanent. This means, that a person is not only suffering damage of the auditory nerve and cochlea, but also in the outer and middle ear parts. Being afflicted with this disorder a person hears great but sounds are just sounds and there is hardly any connection between sounds and meaning.
